Volvos are known for revolutionary technology, helping you stop on a dime and giving you warning signs to improve your short distance driving every day.

With the added security of City Safety, they're even doing the stopping for you.

The life saving technology uses an infrared sensor to monitor objects in front of the car.  If it detects something while traveling between under 31 miles per hour, the car will automatically brake and save you from low traffic collisions.

Volvo of Edmonton | City Safety helps you stop in traffic and prevent collisions

Volvo cars with City Safety technology traveling between 2-9mph will be able to stop completely, while those going over 9-18mph will slow significantly, reducing the consequences of a higher-speed crash. The car will stop for 1.5 seconds, giving you enough time to put your foot on the brake prior to it starting to move you through traffic again.

Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Institute and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety have stated that Sweden's premiere car maker's technology helps reduce, and even prevent, low-speed collisions. The IIHS has even noted that City Safety drivers wind up filing nearly 30% less claims where they are at fault.

City Safety

  • Standard on the Volvo S60, V60, XC60, V70, S80, XC70 models.
  • This system can lessen the severity of or entirely avoid low-speed rear-end collisions at speeds of up to 50km/hour.
  • City Safety keeps a watch on vehicles in front with the help of a laser sensor
built into the windscreen at the height of the rear-view mirror.
  • The car automatically brakes if the driver does not respond in time when the car in front slows down or stops
(or if the driver is driving too fast towards a stationary object).

Volvo of Edmonton | City Safety stops you driving between 2 and 19 miles/hour and helps prevent collisions

Other ways Volvo vehicles are protecting you on the road:

Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto-Brake

  • Using a radar and a camera to monitor pedestrians in front of the car.
  • The system initially provides a warning to alert the driver so he or she can brake or steer clear of the pedestrian.
  • If the driver does not respond, the car automatically brakes with full force moments before
    the collision becomes unavoidable.
  • With automatic braking, collisions can in certain circumstances be avoided at speeds below 35 km/hour.

Pedestrian Airbag Technology

The All-New Volvo V40 features a world-first with a Pedestrian airbag.

  • Sensors in the front bumper register contact between car and pedestrian.
  • Airbag covers raised bonnet area plus 1/3 of windscreen and lower A-pillar.

Adaptive cruise control down to standstill

  • Available on selected models, the latest version of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), automatically helps
maintain a constant safety margin to the vehicle in front
  • For automatic gearboxes this system now operates all the way down to standstill, and for manual cars
from 30 km/h. The car accelerates automatically once the traffic starts moving again.
